4L: Summer Assignment

Essay on Electromagnetic waves
In class we studied the properties of waves. During the summer study Electromagnetic Waves on NASA website Then write an essay of about 400 words whose title is:
‘Using the electromagnetic spectrum to solve a local or global issue’
using the information from the above website AND from other websites (http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/topics/zscrd2p/resources/1, http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/ems1.html, http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/toolbox/emspectrum1.html)
The essay will include:
1) The introduction (you should state the global or local issue and write a brief introduction to the solution of this issue.
2) The body of the essay (that should explain:
• The science behind the solution (i.e. what are electromagnetic waves? how can a wave be produced and used to solve a problem?)
• The benefits and limitations of the scientific application in dealing with this problem
• The implications of the chosen scientific solution to the issue, keeping into account one factor among environmental, political, social or economic factors.)
3) The conclusion

3L Summer Assignment

Prepare a poster on a source of energy and its pros and cons.
Go to:
http://energyquest.ca.gov/story/index.html
and get introduced to the topic by reading the introduction and the source of energy you want to focus on (one chapter chosen among 8-16)
Find other sources on the topic and prepare a poster using
http://edu.glogster.com/?ref=com
(it is a very easy tool, but, if you prefer, you can alternatively write an essay with the same information)
with the following information:
- Energy source - renewable/not renewable
- How it is used (description of the application)
- Pros and cons (implications of using the source you chose)

Waves: fifth question

Minute after minute, hour after hour, day after day, ocean waves continue to splash onto the shore. Explain why the beach is not completely submerged and why the middle of the ocean has not yet been depleted of its water supply.

Waves: fourth question

Curly and Moe are conducting a wave experiment using a slinky. Curly introduces a disturbance into the slinky by giving it a quick back and forth jerk. Moe places his cheek (facial) at the opposite end of the slinky.
Using the definition of wave, describe what Moe experiences as the pulse reaches the other end of the slinky.

Waves: Third question

In order for John to hear Jill, air molecules must move from the lips of Jill to the ears of John.
Do you agree with the previous statement? Explain, referring to the definition of wave.

Waves: Second question

A picture of a wave generated through a slinky. Is it possible to find out the amplitude of the wave? Answer the question referring to the definition of amplitude. If yes, suggest a method to determine the amplitude by the picture, if no, motivate your answer.

Waves - first question

A nice picture of ripples on a pond. Is it possible to find out the period of the wave? Answer the question referring to the definition of period. If yes, suggest a method to determine the period by the picture, if no, motivate your answer.

1) Convert 42 K into Celsius degrees and then 42 C into Kelvin 2)The specific heat of a particular block of steel is 485 J/(kg C°). When we add 5000000 J of thermal energy to a block of this steel its temperature increases by 6.00 °C. - What is the mass of the block? - Suppose we now have 175-kg of this same kind of steel. How much heat must be added to raise its temperature by 6.00 °C?
